World Masterpiece Theater Title Cards that nobody will look at but me, so why should I bother? (1974-77)
The World Masterpiece Theater is a series of TV shows that initially lasted from 1974-1997 in Japan. It has recently been started up again in 2007. Basically, every year They turn a Classic Novel into an anime. The adaptations are said to often be close to the original source material. So far I haven't seen any of the series all the way through, but I'm almost halfway through with the WMT of "Anne of Green Gables".

Heidi -- Girl of the Alps (1974) 52 Episodes. [1/6/1974-12/29/1974] Directed by Isao Takahata.
Notes: Was done by Zuiyo Eizo, rather than its successor Nippon Animation, which did all series afterwards.

A Dog of Flanders (1975) 52 Episodes. [1/5/1975-12/28/1975] Directed by Yoshio Kuroda.
Notes: Was the first WMT to be done by Nippon Animation, and one of their first projects.

3,000 Leagues in Search of Mother (a.k.a. Marco; From the Appeneines to the Andes) (1976) 52 Episodes. [1/4/1976-12/26/1976] Directed by Isao Takahata.
Notes: The series is largely based on Original Ideas. The Original Short Story appeared in a famous Italian Novel. The series mixes the plot of the Original Short Story with a few plot points from other parts of the Original Novel, whilst adding new plot points.

Rascal the Raccoon (1977) 52 Episodes [1/2/1977-12/25/1977] Directed by Hiroshi Saito, Seiji Endo, and Shigeo Koshi.
Notes: The titular Raccoon, Rascal is a popular character in Japan. Many raccoons were shipped out of the US as pets, to the aggravation of the Japanese people who bought them.
